Remembering Blake McCullers
JPT DECA mourns the loss of one of our members, leaders and friends, P. Blake Mc Cullers, who died of suicide on May 9, 2012. Blake was kind, funny, smart, and caring, and he lit up the room wherever he was. He joined DECA in his freshman year at JPT, and made it to State competition in the area of Principals of Business Administration, In his sophomore year, Blake teamed up with friends and fellow Academy of Finance students Jazmine Rivera and Jared Tobar to lead a team effort in the design and implementation of our chapter's Financial Literacy Promotion project, Financial Football. This awesome project won First Place at DECA State competition, and earned the team a spot at International DECA competition.
As an Academy of Finance student, Blake was selected to be a BrightStar Credit Union student teller, where he helped spread the word about the importance of financial literacy.
Blake's passing has touched us all. We feel deep sadness and wish his family peace in this difficult time.
On behalf of JPT DECA and AOF, please honor Blake's memory by sharing your fears, frustrations, and feelings with others. There is always someone who cares and will listen, to help resolve the problems that seem overwhelming.
We will miss you Blake.

Residents over 18 years old are invited to the Taravella High School west parking lot on Saturday, April 7th, from 9am to 4pm to check out eight new Ford automobiles such as the 2013 Mustang and F-150 truck, and then take one for a spin (only one driver per household). Every test drive earns $20 for 17 JPT DECA members traveling to DECA International Competition in Salt Lake City during April 27-May 3. DECA members qualified for the trip through written research manuals and role-play activities at the state level of competition in Orlando earlier this month.
"The Ford test drivers will be entered into a drawing and selected that weekend to win two lower bowl tickets to The Miami Heat vs Detroit Pistons game on Sunday, April 8th, along with a chance at a 2013 Ford Explorer. J.P. Taravella High School Students to Set
Guinness World Record for Longest Handshake Chain
J.P. Taravella High School DECA students will attempt entrance into the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest handshake chain as part of their “Let’s Shake On It!” campaign. Over 1,500 students, teachers and staff are set to participate in the handshake attempt on the school’s football field on the last day of school before the winter break – Friday, December 16 beginning at 12:40 p.m. Taravella High School is located at 10600 Riverside Drive, Coral Springs.
Student members of DECA were inspired to contact the Guinness organization after hearing about the 33-hour two-man handshaking record set earlier this year. They wondered what the record was for the largest group handshake and found that they could set the record with more than 250 individuals participating. From start to finish, it will take approximately 25 minutes to complete the continuously moving handshake. The students will be shaking hands as their commitment to show empathy, respect and acceptance of differences between their peers and to treat each other in more compassionate ways.
Meet the Action Team
Welcome 2011-2012 DECA members. Thank you to our returning members and new members for joining, we're going to have a DECAmazing year! We have so many activities and trips planned that we cant wait to get started on. The Florida Panther trip is right around the corner followed by many others. Also in October, we have our first chapter project fundraiser. This year the chapter project called "Lets Shake On It", is designed to help spread awareness and tolerance of the special education program at JPT. Please help and support the project by participating in our hand shake/tie-tying after school activity in October; followed by a DECA-filled field day in November.
We cant wait to see everyone get involved this year in DECA. Meetings take place every Wednesday in the media center starting at 3:00 pm. Feel free to stop by, lend a hand and see what it really takes to make DECA the best club at JPT. Have a great year and stay posted to see what's to come!
